How does acting morally make us feel?

Philosophers and religious luminaries have long proclaimed that living morally brings happiness. A growing body of research suggests that they are right.

Our research team examines that role that moral self-appraisals play in explaining why doing good leads a person to feel good. Our results to date indicate that part of the reason people who perform prosocial actions feel positive emotion is because acting prosocially allows them to see themselves as being moral individuals. This positive self-view in turn generates positive emotions.

Of course, prosocial behavior taps on only one type of morality: morality concerned with caring for others. Do people feel happier when they live up to any moral principle? Research on this question is ongoing, but results so far suggest that the same pattern holds: those who act morally see themselves as more moral, and that in turn generates positive emotions.
